You may have heard about this little conference in cozy Columbus, Georgia called Creative South.

It’s like a well-kept secret. You certainly aren’t ever going to stumble across it accidentally because—let’s be honest—it’s practically in the middle of nowhere. You’re never just going to “find” yourself in Columbus, Georgia like you would San Francisco or New York City.

But there’s a certain southern charm and hospitality that is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. You’ve never known friendliness until you meet the generous reception that is Creative South.

It’s less like a conference and more like a family. It’s truly impossible to explain and do justice. That’s why this year, I brought Cory McCabe with me to the conference.

Flying Out Our Video Producer

Cory is my brother, but he also works full time at seanwes as video producer. He produces the live video podcasts we stream several times a week, seanwes tv, as well as video courses on seanwes, like the upcoming Learn Lettering 2.0.

I paid to fly Cory out to the conference with me because I was invited to speak at Creative South. I wanted Cory to produce a video of my full conference talk (it’s embedded below—you can watch the whole thing). But I also wanted him to produce a film on Creative South itself.

I’ve been to a lot of conferences and this one is unlike any other.

It’s so difficult to capture because so much of its charm comes from the conversations that happen serendipitously over coffee or a meal outside the conference.

The goal for this film was to capture the vibe of the conference that happens outside the venue and talk to the people and find out what they enjoyed most. We wanted them to tell the story.

Cory and I have been working off and on for the past few months on this project and I’m excited to finally share it with you.

What is Creative South?

Creative South is like an espresso shot of inspiration. You get to hang around other artists, freelancers, designers, animators, podcasters, illustrators, writers, and just all-around creative people.

Unlike some events you’ve been to, there’s absolutely no hierarchy or exclusiveness. Much to the conference’s credit, the speakers they bring in are some of the most genuine people you’ll ever meet. They are more than willing to sit down and have a conversation with you about anything. They’re not going to be hiding away in a green room or their hotel.

The openness and accessibility is so refreshing.

You can’t come away from this conference feeling anything less than invigorated and ready to take on the world.

I’ve gone for the past three years in a row and am already looking forward to the next. Everyone I know cannot wait to return.

As you heard in the video, if you’re even thinking about going, it’s the right choice.
