Earlier today, Eliud Kipchoge made history by becoming the first person ever to run a marathon in under two hours.

His final marathon time: 1:59:40.

He maintained a 4:34 mile pace for 26.2 incredible miles (2:50 kilometer pace).

Maintaining this pace for so long requires spectacular physical fitness, but pushing through the unbelievable pain is entirely a mental game.

This word class athlete doesn’t merely endure pain. He embraces it.

Kipchoge is known to smile when pain reaches extreme levels. He knows the first 20 miles are just setting the stage. The real challenge starts when his body cries out at the end.

How he responds when discomfort is at its highest is what defines him.

Today was not just a victory for the running world. It was an achievement for humankind.

I don’t know about you, but I’m off to go run!
