We don’t often think of people in terms of who they could be in the future. We tend to treat people as who they are right now.
It makes sense: “I’ll respect someone when they deserve respect.”
But people don’t respond to the absence of positive reinforcement.
Don’t wait for someone to improve to treat them well. They will realize their potential if you simply play the part of a person who believes in them.
Behavior starts with a belief. “I’m a writer. Therefore, I write.”
“I’m a runner. Therefore, I run.”
We all just need someone to believe in us.
We need someone to treat us as if we already are the person we could be. Then we start to believe we are that person. Finally, we become that person.
