137: The Overlap Technique: A Crash Course
I want to help you make a living with your passion. This is why I started working on a book in early 2014 called The Overlap Technique: it’s a down-to-earth, practical guide to becoming an expert and making more money than your day job before you even quit.
I got about 20,000 words into it, and then had to put it on the back-burner. I continued teaching a lot of the principles in the podcast, but I put the writing on hold to work on my website and building the Community.
During the time that elapsed between starting the book and returning to it later in the year, I’d received hundreds of emails from people telling me their biggest struggles with pursuing their passions.
I decided to throw out the first 20,000 words and start from scratch.
The book will launch next year, but in the mean time, the tremendous feedback I’ve received has really shaped the book into being a direct answer to your most pressing questions. Giving the material some breathing room has really allowed me to refine the message.
It’s been more than 80 episodes since I’ve last dedicated an episode to talking about The Overlap Technique and making the difficult transition from soul-sucking day job to doing what you love and sustaining yourself. In this episode, I give you a crash course on the refined concepts and the four core pillars of being able to keep your passion and have it sustain you long term.
It’s the perfect episode for a first-time listener!
084: Using The Overlap Technique With Multiple Businesses
I’m joined once again by good friend, Matt Lopez who you might remember from e059. Matt is a serial entrepreneur who maintains an intense pace (I think this is why we get along so well). He shares insight into how he started his many businesses, the struggles of being taken seriously as a young entrepreneur, what he calls “business goldmines,” removing yourself from the things you shouldn’t be doing in your business, and why he offer $500 to his employees to quit.
We discuss the application of The Overlap Technique with multiple businesses and using capital from one business to fuel another. You’ll always leave a discussion with Matt inspired, and this episode is no exception.
052: The Overlap Technique
I’m rushing out for a flight as I type this, but rather than leave you empty handed, I figured I’d be crazy and record the talk I’ll be giving this weekend so you can listen from the comfort of your homes. I share my journey, cover The Overlap Technique in depth, and provide a bit more info about my upcoming book. Do yourself a favor and listen in. Enjoy!
140: I’m Writing 3 Books in a Month
I’m writing three books in one month. Now that I’ve said the crazy part, let me tell you a little bit about the story because I want to bring you along this journey.
Two years ago, I shared this concept called The Overlap Technique. The Overlap Technique is a down-to-earth, practical, step-by-step guide on how to get out of a soul-sucking day job and do the work that you love and that fulfills you.
I actually started writing this book, The Overlap Technique. I got about 20,000 words in and then I decided to scrap it, because I started writing the book that I wanted to write, rather than the book people needed to hear.
I spent the next year researching, talking to people, having conversations, figuring out what their unique struggles were and then I started writing the book again based on those new findings.
The problem was I wasn’t very purposeful about the book writing. I didn’t set a deadline or say when I was going to finish it and it ended up being put on the back burner.

204: Level Up Your Business (Part 2 of 4): Overlap
The Overlap Technique is the concept I’m writing my book on. It’s where you establish a solid foundation to cover either your bills or your business expenses.
It’s crucial that your foundation cover 100% of your bills. If you’re in a day job and you want to overlap to your passion, the day job must cover 100% of the bills if you want to prevent scarcity mindset.
Scarcity mindset comes from compromise. When you aren’t covering 100% of your bills with a day job (or some sort of baseline recurring revenue) you will find yourself getting desperate.
When in desperation, you are more prone to making compromises on quality of life, your professionalism, your rate, and the clients you work with.
In this episode, we discuss the establishing of your foundation so that you can level up to where you want to be. This also applies even if you have an existing business. I have been working for myself for 10 years and I’m constantly in a stage of overlapping.
001: Doing What You Love With The Overlap Technique
Aaron and I discuss our backgrounds and the benefits of overlapping passion pursuits with a “day job” to make the transition to doing what you love.
282: Overlap: Get From the Life You Have to the Life You Want
My first book has been in various stages of the back burner for the past three years. At the end of 2015, I said, “Enough! I’m going to finish it once and for all!”
In July of this year, I set aside a month to write this book. I ended up finishing all 75,000 words of it in 14 days (not including over 10,000 more words spent journaling about the writing process).
It’s called Overlap: Getting from the life you have to the life you want.
The book is for the person who wants to achieve greatness. It’s for anyone who wants to create additional streams of income or become a master at their craft. Whether you’re a leader or simply broke, without the support of their family, and feel like you don’t have enough time in the day, this book will give you clarity. It will help you create the life you want.
There are 26 chapters (you can see the full list at http://OverlapBook.com. Before this recording, I asked the members of the Community which of the 26 chapters they most wanted to hear my talk about.
Here were the top three chapters people were interested in:
1. Increasing Your Focus
2. Teaching What You Know
3. Choosing What to Be Known For
In this episode, I give you an in-depth look at the three above chapters to give you an idea of the depth of this book.
Overlap is being printed as a beautiful, clothbound, embossed, hardcover book. I wanted to produce an item that felt as timeless as the message it contains.
The book is available for pre-order now and there’s a special bundle order that includes an exclusive print for anyone so kind as to support the project in its early stages.
I hope you enjoy.
How to Write a Book in 30 Days
Sean McCabe set an ambitious (some might say unrealistic) goal in early 2016; he decided to write three books during the month of July.
He ended up consolidating the three books into one, writing 80,000 words over the course of two weeks, while simultaneously blogging and streaming videos about the experience.
The resulting book is called Overlap: The Ultimate Guide to Turning Your Side Passion Into a Successful Business. It’s is a step-by-step, practical guide to taking the thing you’re passionate about (your side hustle) and getting to the place where you’re actually making money from it.
