Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5

Sean’s recorded a podcast mini-series called Finding Community, and the first part (of five) just published today.

Everyone needs a supportive community

Why does community matter, and why do you want to focus on finding community?

A supportive community is rocket fuel for:

  • Finding your people, your audience, your tribe.
  • Starting or growing your own business.
  • Being financially supported by your creative passions.
  • Getting support when you’re stuck.

Every time Sean has leveled up in business, it was because of a relationship, not just information. Listen to this episode of the seanwes podcast to learn more: seanwes podcast 331: The Right Advice at the Wrong Time Is the Wrong Advice.

As helpful as information can be, you need context to apply it to your own situation.

That’s where community comes in.

Community can’t survive negativity

A negative attitude destroys communities. We’re not talking about critique or constructive criticism: you know true negativity when you encounter it. Negativity pulls you down… and keeps you down.

When you have a negative voice in your life, you might want to pull that person up, help them let go of that negativity. And it’s great to want to help!

But negativity has gravity on its side.

It’s easier for a negative person to pull you down than for you to pull them up into positivity.

You have to cut negativity out of your life. We’ll talk about how to do that in a minute.

Negativity will kill your passion

Negativity is a breeding ground for scarcity mindset. We talk about this a lot:

  • When critical resources are scarce, you get desperate.
  • You’ll do anything to acquire those resources (usually money).
  • You take on jobs you shouldn’t.
  • You work with bad clients.
  • The negative people alongside you complain and enable this.
  • Pretty soon, your passion, the reason you wanted to make a living this way… it’s gone.

This story is too common. You quit your job to pursue your creative passion, and pretty soon you’re mired in scarcity mindset (unless you read Overlap for free online, that is!)

The opposite of scarcity mindset is abundance mindset: choosing to see the world as full of opportunity and the resources you need to survive as being widely available.

The tricky thing is, you need to think in terms of abundance even when you’re in the middle of circumstantial scarcity.

Even when your bank account is almost empty… you have to believe you can make ends meet.

You have to defy what you see and make decisions based on a mindset of abundance. And you can’t do that when you’re surrounded by negativity.

You can’t afford to be surrounded by negative people

You can’t afford to be around these types of people:

  • People who don’t believe in you.
  • People who aren’t achieving what you want to achieve.

We’ve all heard that you become the average of the people around whom you spend your time. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing depends on who you’re around!

If you’re surrounded by people who are lazy, complaining, negative, not driven… you’ll tend to be like that as well, try as you might not to be.

You need to cut the negative inputs out of your life.

But it’s not enough to just cut the negativity out of your life. There’s another step that you’ll hear about soon in Part 2 of this series.

To keep this short, here’s your homework:

  • Cut negative people out of your life wherever you can.
    • Cancel events where you’re hanging around negative people.
    • Miss that party.
    • Skip that conference.
    • Ditch that happy hour where the team from work sits around complaining.
  • Unfollow and unsubscribe from negativity online.
    • Unsubscribe from negativity in podcasts, YouTube channels, and email newsletters.
    • Unfollow negative people on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

In a couple days, you’ll hear about what to do after you’ve cut out negativity—but you have to start here.

Sean: Hey, it’s Sean McCabe. I’m very excited to share with you this new series I’m putting out over the next couple of weeks called. Finding community all about how do you find your people? Why does community matter? Why do you need to get around people with a positive mindset? We’re going to talk about all of that in this little mini series over the next couple of weeks, so very excited to share this with you.

[00:00:23] But before we get into things, one of the reasons I wanted to share on this topic is to make sure you were aware that our annual membership price for Shawn West membership is increasing permanently. On March 20th so if you’ve ever been considering Shawn West membership, you’ve wanted to become a member at some point, now is the time to do so.

[00:00:43] You can get a lot of free months. You can find out how many at Shawn, but we’re increasing the price to reflect the current value of Shawn West membership. And once that price goes up on March 20th it goes up permanently. Obviously, we’ll grandfather you in at the current rate, but I just wanted to make sure you were aware of that.

[00:01:03] Now that I have, let’s go ahead and get into this finding community series. So who is this series for? This is for you. If you are looking for community, you’re trying to find your people, or you want to start or grow your own business. Maybe you want to be financially supported with your own creative pursuit, something you’re passionate about, or maybe you’re just trying to find people who will support and help you break through the challenges you’re facing right now and get unstuck.

[00:01:35] Every time I’ve leveled up in my business, it was as a result of a relationship with a person, not just information. I’ve talked about it before in a past episode called the right advice at the wrong time is the wrong advice. It’s not just about the information itself, the content, it’s about context.

[00:01:56] Content is important, but you need a community. With whom to parse that content. Is this right for me? Is this right for me? Now, in this way, all of the mistakes I’ve made were as a result of applying the right advice at the wrong time. So while that advice and content is important, it’s context that really matters and you can’t get context about your unique situation.

[00:02:23] By listening to a podcast, you need something more. You need to interact with people. That’s where community comes in. Now, community cannot survive with negativity. I’m not talking about critique. I’m not talking about constructive criticism. I’m talking about negativity. You’ve got to cut out negativity from your life.

[00:02:45] Negativity. I like to say negativity has gravity on its side. You might be thinking, well, okay, I’ve got some negative people in my life, but you know, I want to help them. I want to pull them out of the hole. You know, they’re in the hole. And you know they’re being negative. I want to help pull them out of there.

[00:03:03] The problem is negativity has gravity on its side. It’s much easier for them to pull you into the hole than it is for you to pull them out of the hole. The problem with negativity is it’s a breeding ground for scarcity mindset. What is scarcity mindset to common theme? It’s a recurring theme we’ve talked about on this podcast for many years, but just as a refresher or in case your new scarcity is based on this word, a scarce like scarce resources.

[00:03:32] If you don’t have much water in the desert. Water is scarce. So when critical key resources are scarce, you end up getting desperate. You’ll do anything to get that scarce resource. Usually this is money, right? Maybe you quit your job and you wanted to start doing your own thing, but you didn’t set it up quite right.

[00:03:53] Maybe you didn’t read the overlap and you end up in this place where you’re desperate for the money. You ended up taking on jobs that you shouldn’t. You end up working with people that are not good people to work with and you know it because you’re desperate and especially if you’re in an environment with negative people, maybe they encourage that or maybe they complain alongside you.

[00:04:15] Maybe they enable your complaining about your situation. Either way, this gives way to compromise. Where you end up doing things, working with people, taking on projects that you wouldn’t otherwise normally do because you’re desperate. This is scarcity mindset and ultimately it results in killing the passion.

[00:04:36] The passion I’m talking about is the passion. You have your passion for the thing that you love to do, for the thing that you’ve really wanted to do, that you would love to do full time if you could, if you could make the money you need from it. That thing you’re passionate about, when you mix in compromise that comes from this desperation as a result of scarcity mindset, you end up working with the wrong people, undervaluing yourself, not charging what you’re worth.

[00:05:03] You’ll ultimately kill the passion. Now, here’s where it gets worse. Scarcity mindset only begets more of the same. What that means is when you have a mindset of scarcity, you’re operating on scarce resources, out of desperation. It only creates more scarcity, more scarcity of resources. It’s this recursive thing.

[00:05:27] It’s a downward spiral. The only way out of scarcity mindset. Is to think in terms of abundance and you have to think in terms of abundance while you’re in circumstantial, scarcity. This is the really difficult part because you look around yourself, you look at your bank account, you’re not seeing what you want to see.

[00:05:46] So you’re going to want to base your mindset on what you see right now in your current circumstances. And really, you have to start to think in terms of abundance. While you’re in circumstantial, scarcity, you have to defy what your eyes tell you about your circumstances and make decisions according to abundance.

[00:06:08] And it’s only when you do this consistently, and this is while you’re in the circumstances you don’t want to be in. You have to think this way. It’s only when you do that consistently that your external world comes into alignment and you actually end up in the situation you want to be. This is 100% impossible.

[00:06:26] If you are actively engaging or participating or consuming negative inputs, positioning yourself around negative people now who could be contributing. Two negative inputs in your life. This could be friends, this could be family, it could be people at the job. You can’t afford to be around people who don’t believe in you and people who aren’t achieving what you want to achieve.

[00:06:54] You know, you’ve heard that you become like the people around you. Well, it’s a good or a bad thing if you’re not hanging around the people that are doing the thing you want to do, achieving what you want to achieve. You’re not going to become like that, and even worse, if you’re hanging around people who are definitely not doing that, but they’re even complaining and they’re negative and they’re lazy and they’re not disciplined and they’re not driven and they’re not going after what they want in life, you’re going to become like that as well.

[00:07:24] Now, cutting out the negative input isn’t all that you have to do. There’s something else we’re going to cover in part two of the series, but for now I’m going to keep this short. This is your homework. This is your call to action. Cut out the negativity in your life, unfollow and unsubscribe. Now, what are you going to unfollow an unsubscribe from?

[00:07:45] Well, I’ll give you some examples. Unsubscribed from some of the podcasts you’re listening to, or the news that you’re reading, or the YouTube videos you watch, or the Instagram profiles you’re looking at, or the Twitter accounts and Facebook feeds you follow. Maybe it’s newsletters you subscribe to.

[00:08:04] Unfollow an unsubscribe. Be roofless. Don’t stand for any negativity. You’ve got to cut that negativity out of your life. Cancel events where you’re hanging around people that are negative. This can be a onetime event. It’s a gathering. It’s a party. It’s a meeting. It’s a conference. Something that you go to where you know.

[00:08:23] You’re going to end up hanging around negative people, or it could be a recurring theme in your life, a recurring event, something you do every Wednesday night, every other Saturday, the last Friday of the month. You know, there’s places where you go, where you’re hanging around the wrong people. You’ve got to cut that out.

[00:08:40] And the same with your digital life. Unfollow, unsubscribe from those negative inputs. So. The next part. I’m going to release these every couple of days over the next couple of weeks. Keep them nice and short. We’re going to talk about what else you need to do besides cutting out negativity, but before I go, I do want to remind you that.

[00:08:59] Shawn West membership, the community at Sean Wes, we think this is going to be a great place for you if you’re looking for like minded people in creative pursuits of all kinds, who have a positive mindset, who are applying themselves, taking action every day. They want to help you succeed. They want to grow with you.

[00:09:18] You’re going to find business partners. You’re gonna find accountability partners. You’re gonna make lifelong friends here. We would love to have you in the community. And right now you can get our best deal on annual membership by going to Shawn and again, that price is increasing permanently on March 20th just to reflect the current value of the membership.

[00:09:40] So we’d love for you to jump on that, get the best deal, and even when the price goes up in the future, we’re going to lock you in at the current rate. We’re going to grandfather you. At the current rate. So we always reward loyalty at Shawn West. That means even when the price goes up later, you stay at the current rate for as long as you’re a member.

[00:09:57] So Sean thanks for listening. I’m excited and I’m looking forward to sharing part two with you and a couple of days. So I’ll talk to you soon.
