Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5

Today we’ve posted Part 3 of our 5-part podcast miniseries, Finding Community.

In the first two episodes, Sean gave us the crucial steps for replacing the negative inputs in your life with positive ones. With all that new positive energy, we can get to work pursuing our creative passions!

But once we’ve created our great work, then what? We want to share it with the world. We want to forge friendships, make connections, build an audience around our work!

Today Sean shares exactly how to make that happen.

Getting someone famous to promote you

Everyone wants a shout-out from a famous person, right? It would be great if someone with huge reach promoted your thing to their audience.

The problem is, it’s too late.

If you try to befriend someone famous so they’ll promote your work, they’ll see you coming. Everybody wants something from them. So how do you get someone with influence to promote you?

You have to befriend them before they’re famous.

Oh sure, you’re thinking, if you could predict who was going to be famous you wouldn’t need their promotion!

Good news: you CAN predict who’s going to be big using The Greatness Formula, which you’ll hear about in a minute.

Two types of positive people

Positive people—the people you want to surround yourself with—fall into two categories:

  • People to learn from: those many levels ahead of you in your field.
  • People to connect with: those on the same level as you.

Obviously, you want to connect with people who are already famous and successful in your field, but it doesn’t work that way; learn from them instead.

Connect with people on your own level who will someday have influence.

Seek out people who are driven, taking action, making great work, have a positive mindset. These are the people to surround yourself with.

This leads us to The Greatness Formula: how you can recognize greatness before it happens:

The Greatness Formula: Mindset × Action + Time

You want to identify:

  • People with a positive mindset (you know it when you see it).
  • Who are consistently taking action.
  • It’s only a matter of time before they achieve greatness.

Attach yourself to these people!

What level are you?

When we talk about people being at different “levels” in their field, what do we mean?

It’s a combination of experience, notoriety, and success.

These numbers are arbitrary, but let’s say you have 2,000 hours of practice as an artist: you’re a Level 2 Artist.

Now you know not to pursue someone who has 18,000 hours of practice—they’re a Level 18 Artist!

Find other Level 2 Artists who match The Greatness Formula.

Find the Level 2 Artists who are making work, sharing it with the world, practicing their art daily.

Because these people are at your level, you can connect with them. Attach yourself to them. What does that mean?

Well, how do you get a best friend? By being a best friend. Here’s the Best Friend Method:

  • Comment on their work.
  • Share their work.
  • Make a video for them.
  • Write a thoughtful email.
  • Send a package.
  • Repeat the above 100x.

When you find a person who’s going places, you want to become their greatest supporter. That last step is the key: Repeat 100x.

There’s one more key to connecting with someone who’s going places:

You have to embody The Greatness Formula yourself.

Embody The Greatness Formula

In the last two parts of this series, we talked about cutting out the negative, and replacing it with the positive.

In order to pursue greatness, a positive mindset is crucial.

But a positive mindset alone is not enough!

The part you may be missing is taking action.

You can’t just have a positive mindset and do nothing—that won’t get you anywhere.

When you have a positive mindset and take action, people will notice. They’ll recognize The Greatness Formula, even subconsciously.

Since you’re following the 14/7 rule discussed in Part 2, let’s assume you have a positive mindset.

When you add in massive action, people can recognize you’ll achieve greatness.

It’s only a matter of time.

Now we’ve got two Level 2 Artists who want to be there for each other.

Repeat this process, and soon you have an entire crew of people, all accelerating each other’s success.

Finding your crew

Let’s say you have a YouTube channel with 2,000-5,000 subscribers. Now you know not to try buddying up to the creator with millions of followers who’s been making videos for years.

Don’t try to befriend the person a dozen levels ahead, learn from them instead.

Find the other people whose subscriber counts are similar to yours (who also have a positive mindset), and grow with them.

Work in the trenches with other people who are pursuing greatness. Share each other’s work. Give each other feedback. Support each other. That’s how you’ll find success.

Now, how do you ensure you attract the right people?

You have to put out quality content, and you have to do it consistently.

It’s not enough to put up a video a week for a month… you have to be consistent for years.

But what if you want results now?

Well, we’ve done the work for you.

Sean spent seven years creating amazing content and attracting like-minded people. The seanwes Community is full of positive people at every level who can help you grow.

Sean: Hey, it’s Sean McCabe. We are back with part three of our series on finding community. Everyone wants a shout out, right? To get that famous person to promote you. It would be great if the person with all this exposure, all this reach, all this influence they share to your work. They told everyone to go follow you, go subscribe to you, go buy your product.

[00:00:20] It doesn’t work like that. They’re getting tons of requests from people for a free handout every day. Once someone’s famous, it’s really hard to connect with them. Hey, I want to be buddies with you. Yeah, sure you do. You just want something from me. You know? They’re wise to that. Right? So how do you get someone who has influence to promote you?

[00:00:40] I’m going to give a little bit of it away. My view on this by mentioning the title of this part three, it’s learn from people ahead. Connect with people beside. So you want someone with influence to promote you. The best way to do that is to become friends with them before they’re famous. And you might think, Oh, sure.

[00:01:01] Easier said than done. If I could predict the future, I’d be set. Well, you can predict the future, and it’s called the greatness formula. This is how to recognize greatness before it happens. And I’m going to tell you what that is in just a minute. So we’ve discussed getting around positive people in the previous part of this series.

[00:01:20] And as far as positive people are concerned, there’s two categories. There’s positive people to learn from. These are people who are many levels ahead of you and there’s positive people to connect with. These are people who are on the same level as you. I know you want to connect with people who are already famous and be buddies with them, but it doesn’t work that way.

[00:01:42] It’s much better to learn from them and connect with people on your level who will eventually have significant influence. Which is what I’m going to tell you how to do in this part of the series. So how do you know if someone’s ahead of you? How do you know if you should learn from someone or try to connect with them?

[00:02:00] That’s what I’m going to explain. So when either category. You want to find people who are in the arena, so to speak, people who are making things, people who are putting themselves out there, people who are driven, people who are taking action. Now, here’s my formula for greatness. I call this the greatness formula.

[00:02:18] This is how you can recognize greatness before it happens. Mindset times, action plus time. People with a positive mindset and you know them when you encounter them. Who are taking action. It’s only a matter of time before they achieve greatness. You want to attach yourself to these people. So let’s talk about levels.

[00:02:43] When I say people on the same level as you people, many levels ahead of you, what am I talking about? What do I mean by level? Think of it as a combination of experience, notoriety, success, et cetera. So as an example, let’s say you’re an artist with 2000 hours of practice. We’ll call that a level two artist.

[00:03:04] Don’t go after someone with 18,000 hours of practice. They’re a level 18 artists. Find other level two artists who match the greatness formula to whom you can attach yourself. This means finding another artist with roughly 2000 hours of practice who has a positive mindset, and again, you’ll know it when you see it and they’re currently taking action.

[00:03:30] Which means they are drawing daily. When you find an artist like this, immediately attach yourself to them. Now what do I mean by attach? I mean become their best friend. And how do you get a best friend by being a best friend? Here’s the best friend method. Comment on their work. Share their work. Make a video for them.

[00:03:53] Write a thoughtful email. Send a package. Repeat times 100. Now this person is going places and you want to become their greatest supporter. Again, they have a positive mindset and they’re taking action, which means it’s only a matter of time until they reach greatness. So they’re on your same level, 2000 hours of art drawing, right?

[00:04:17] And they’re drawing daily. They got a positive mindset. This is who you want to attach yourself to. Now the last step is key. Repeat times 100. Don’t expect to be someone’s best friend after you do one nice thing. You have to repeat it. It’s also important that you yourself match the greatness formula. If you don’t, why are they going to want to attach themselves to you?

[00:04:41] So you have to embody this. You need that positive mindset, which is why we talked about in parts one and two of this finding community series. You’ve got to cut out the negative inputs and then you’ve got to surround yourself with positivity. The only missing part for you is taking action. You can’t just have a positive mindset and then sit around and do nothing.

[00:05:02] You’ve got to be taking action. You’ve gotta be moving forward. So you also match the greatness formula, and they’re going to recognize this subconsciously, even if they don’t know what the greatness formula is. Now, let’s assume you have a positive mindset cause you’re piping positivity into your brain.

[00:05:18] 14 seven which is that play on 24 seven we talked about in the last part, you’re taking massive action in your craft. We’re going to assume this, right? This person is subconsciously also going to recognize that it’s just a matter of time before you achieve greatness, and they will also want to attach themselves to you.

[00:05:38] So you’re doing this right. You’re commenting on their work, you’re sharing, you’re providing thoughtful input, you’re sending them videos, you’re sending them a package. You repeat this with other artists on the same level and now you have a cohort, you’re going to accelerate each other’s rocket to success.

[00:05:56] Here’s another example. If you’re a videographer with 3000 subscribers on YouTube, the people to whom you want to attach yourself might also have something like two to 5,000 subscribers. Attach yourself to them using the best friend method I described a moment ago and grow with them. Don’t try to become buddies with someone who’s been making videos for eight years and has 300,000 subscribers.

[00:06:19] That’s someone from whom you learn. Instead, you want to learn from people ahead, connect with people beside, get around positive people who are ahead of you. They’ve been where you are in the past and learn from them. Get around positive people who are where you are now and taking action. Connect with them and grow together.

[00:06:43] Where do you find these people? That’s the tricky part. You have to put out quality content to attract the right people and you need to do it consistently for years. Now you’re thinking, well, Sean, I don’t, I don’t got years. I don’t have years. I want results now. Well, here’s the good news. I’ve already done the hard work for you.

[00:07:04] I’ve spent the last seven years consistently creating content, which has attracted a community of likeminded people in every creative field. You can imagine these are incredibly talented people who are eager to help you succeed, but just as important, it’s also full of positive people at every level.

[00:07:23] With whom you can connect and grow. The community at Shawn West has both of these. They have people who are ahead of you that you can learn from, and they have people who are right beside you. You can connect with people, find lifelong friends. They start mastermind groups and even launch their own communities as a result of what they learn and who they meet in the Shawn West community and now is a really good time to join.

[00:07:48] If it’s something you’ve wanted to do. At some point, I’m going to become a Shawn West member.
