We are supported by you.

Sean McCabe

When I started seanwes, I made the conscious decision to not make you the product.

Meaning, I never wanted to sell you (your eyes, your ears, and your attention) to advertisers.

My goal was always to practice Relationship Marketing: provide value upfront in hopes that you will reciprocate.

It’s a risky move, because it requires an upfront investment that may not pay off, but I always felt like it was the best move.

Why?

Problems with the ad revenue model.

Many online businesses make money with advertisements and sponsored content.

Now, this approach actually makes a ton of sense for a few reasons:

  • The content creator gets paid so they can stay in business and continue producing content.
  • The sponsor gets their product in front of the eyes of potential customers.
  • The consumer gets free content (with the caveat that they have to spend their time consuming advertisements).

However, in this arrangement, the audience is the product and the advertiser is the customer. The audience member, the listener, the reader (that’s YOU!) is the product that is being sold.

When the audience is the product, the way forward for the business is to:

  • Maximize the amount of time and attention you spend (e.g., create addictive interfaces, clickbait content, gamification, and dopamine reward cycles).
  • Aggregate the most granular information possible on individuals for the purpose of ad targeting.
  • Sell the users’ time and attention to the highest paying advertiser for whom the target user’s data profile is extremely relevant.

Pretty soon, you end up with something that looks a lot like many of the big, addictive, social media platforms we have today—that exist merely to sell your attention to advertisers.

If you’re not paying, you are the product.

I didn’t like this trajectory. It doesn’t place the focus on you, your experience, and your time.

Personally, I don’t want to spend my time watching or listening to advertisements. I want to consume content I want, when I want it, with no interruptions.

That’s why I donate directly to content creators I appreciate and pay for things like Netflix, YouTube Red, and Hulu with No Commercials. I’d rather have my time back to do with it what I want.

Our podcasts don’t have sponsors.

There’s nothing more annoying than a podcast with sponsors. I’m always having to mash the 15-second forward button—and sometimes that’s really inconvenient, like when I’m listening to a podcast on my bluetooth speaker in the shower.

I never want to create a frustrating experience for my listeners.

Even with millions of downloads, I turn away inquiries from big-name sponsors to keep the show interruption-free. I value your time too much to sell it to advertisers.

We continue to produce shows each week and make the latest episode available publicly (and ad-free).

Showing support for what we do.

Over the years, we’ve received many emails from people asking if there is a way to support what we do.

Until now, we haven’t had a way to do that. I would just reply that you can purchase a course or membership to show your support.

While seanwes membership grants access to the full archive of shows on the seanwes network, it also includes $2,000+ worth of training and access to the Community—and its subscription price is in line with it being a serious business membership.

This is great for someone who is serious about their business and wants access to the Community and all of the training resources we have, but what if you just want to access the podcast archive?

That’s where seanwes supporter comes in.

Introducing: seanwes supporter

Rather than simply be a way for you to show your support with a recurring subscription, we wanted seanwes supporter to be something that provides even more value.

seanwes supporters have access to the full podcast archive.

Your subscription also gives you your own private RSS feeds for all of the shows so you can listen to the complete backlog in your favorite podcast app.

New shows, released every week, will also be added automatically to your podcast app.

This is our way of saying “thank you” for your support.

Online Access to Overlap Book Included!

I didn’t want to just stop at giving you access to the full podcast archive. To make this offer extremely compelling, I’m also including full online access to my book, Overlap.

You can read the full Overlap book online using any device as a seanwes supporter.

In fact, it is the single most affordable way to consume the book—making your seanwes supporter subscription more than worth it just for the book alone!

Compare:
  • Hardcover – $39
  • eBook – $29
  • Audiobook – $19
  • Online access with seanwes supporter – $12
