Where do you want to be? Have you taken a moment to think about where you see yourself in 5 years?

What do you want to accomplish? What about your current situation would you like to change in that time?

That change is not something that’s going to happen automatically. You’re going to end up somewhere in 5 years. Hopefully you’ll be around. Hopefully I’ll be around. We’re going to end up somewhere. It can either be a place we end up by accident or a place we seek to be. What does that place look like? Now the important question I have for you today:

Is what you’re doing right now taking you closer to where you want to go?

Is what you’re doing on a day-to-day basis bringing you closer to your goal? If it’s not taking your closer, it’s taking you further.

It’s easy to get caught up in the grind and let things just happen to you. But if we’re going to make purposeful progress in our careers, we need to set our sights on a goal. If that goal changes, that’s ok, but at least we’ve made progress in a general direction.

Reverse-Engineer Your Destination

Start with where you want to be and reverse-engineer that. Work backwards from that point. Break it down into steps. What is it going to take to get there? Break it down and work backwards.

What is the second to last step? What’s the step before that? Keep going until you have the very next step in front of you. What do you need to be doing? What do you need to be focusing on?

If the next step is something you only need to do once, set aside some time and schedule it. Get it done.

Knock out the one-time tasks until you reach something that requires some stamina. Eventually you hit a requirement that is ongoing. Some things you have to continually do over a long period of time. Are you doing those things? Are the things you’re doing on a day-to-day basis aligning with the things you’ve identified will get you to your goal? If not, something needs to change.

You need to make a change in your life, in your routine, in your focus, in the things you say yes to, in how late you go to bed or how early you get up.

If what you’re doing isn’t aligned with the things that will get you where you want to be, something has to change.

Are you going to make that change?

I hope this episode encourages you to take a step back and reevaluate.
